Bio-Ocean is a joint study programme in Biological Oceanography offering an interdisciplinary combination of lectures, seminars, practicals. The programme covers Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Marine Geology, Experimental Design and Data Reporting and Cost-Benefit Analysis.

Biological Oceanography is a 2-year programme consisting of compulsory courses, elective courses and a research project.

Welcome Party Fall 2004
First year: basic studies in oceanography at the University of Kiel followed by advanced courses in oceanography and resource management at the University of Southern Denmark.

Second year: a research project in Biological Oceanography carried out either in Kiel or Odense and may be experimental or oriented towards administration/management.

The study programme (120 ECTS) in biological oceanography consists of compulsory courses (45 ECTS), optional courses (15 ECTS) and a project (60 ECTS).

The joint programme spans four semesters:

• Term 1: mid-October to end January: Courses in Kiel

• July to September: Field courses and excursions in Kiel or Odense

In the third and fourth terms, students carry out an independent project work in biological oceanography under the supervision of an academic advisor from Kiel and Odense. An email list is probably still the number one source of targeted free traffic (if you already have a list).

With a list, you control the traffic, and you don’t have to worry about appeasing a Google type entity. In other words, you can correspond on your terms and don’t have to worry about any quality score ratings. You can send an email anytime you want, of course, there are rules you need to follow to keep your list happy.

The caveat to that is you cannot send any old rubbish and expect conversions. You need to develop a relationship with your list in order obtain their trust. But this doesn’t have to be continual hard work. You will follow-up on a continual basis with your prospects by using an auto-responder i.e.,. a sequence of emails that are sent out at a predetermined time.

You may be asking “How does this work with affiliate marketing?”

It is easier to pitch a high-end CPA or CPS offer if you have taken the time to develop a relationship with your list. With CPV/PPV traffic you could get prospects on your list for pennies, and you now have the opportunity to develop a relationship and start marketing the high-end offers related to the sites/domains you bid on when sending the CPV traffic. You can now continue marketing high-end offers on a continual basis, and you find this much more lucrative then simply sending the person straight to an offer. Think of it like this – when you direct link to an offer – either the prospect fills in the required field/s, or they don’t –> and then the relationship ends.

Don’t get me wrong – this middle man broker type business can be lucrative, but if you want to make money on a long-term basis and at the same build a long term sustainable business, I highly recommend that you take the time to develop an email list and then promote affiliate products through your list.

There are three simple steps you need, and I’ll cover them in a followup post along with the difference between single and double opt-in lists which will lead nicely into why you would build a list and only email out to it just once (throw away records).

How do you go about setting things up, so you have everything in place – all ready for you build out your email list? Before you worry about traffic, you will need a few things in place.

Step one:

Get a Hosted List Server – Aweber, GetResponse, iContact or MailChimp these companies are some a few of the biggest. You would like to use one of these instead of hosting an email client on your server as email sent out through these providers are less likely to end up in people's spam folder. Also they allow you to easily create an auto-responder sequence and keep statistical tracking allowing you to see open rates and click through rates.

Step two:

It is essential to get people's attention, and for this, you will need an opt-in bribe or lead magnet. This needs to be something that will be seen or perceived as high value and could be:

• a free report
• free software
• a video containing relevant and important information
• or an ebook.

As I mentioned, this is vital for getting people's attention and thus attracting them onto your list.

Step Three:

Setting up your landing page or squeeze page to “capture” the lead/email address. Things to include would be

It is important to note here that you will need to 2 variations of your squeeze/landing page. They do not want to be completely different looking pages, just slightly different. For example different size or type of font used for your headline or no headline and only an image.

This is vital because you will always want to be split testing your lead/landing/squeeze page to determine which one is outperforming the other, i.e., Which one is getting you the most opt-ins/ leads? Each variation/page will have different conversion rates depending on the different attribute you altered.

Remember for this to be a “fair test” you will only want to change ONE variable only per landing page. This is vital as it ensures your split test is actionable. Of course, you will need to track outperforming the other. For this I use Lead Pages, but you could use Google Content Experiments, previously you would have used Google Website Optimizer, but things have been updated in Google land.

As I mentioned in my previous post – it is very important to create two variations of your squeeze page for split testing. You need to see which variation is collecting the most leads to your list. Now after you have determined the “winner”, or you determine which page is the best statistically you will then take the winner and scrape the other.

The winner, and it may be your original page, will now become your ‘control.’ You have to create another new variation to test against that, and you have to keep repeating this process. After time you will find that your cost per lead/opt-in to your email list will continue to drop the higher the opt-in rate when you are buying traffic.

On the topic of growing your list – you have two options when a prospect does enter their email. You can try for single opt-in or a double opt-in. A single opt-in means that once the email field is filled and the button is clicked you could send the person straight to the offer. The other option is for the person to be directed to a page that informs that they will need to go now to their email inbox and click the included link before being directed to the offer. The latter is called the double opt-in for obvious reasons.

You can imagine that there will be people that will not bother to go through the double opt-in, and so your list growth may suffer but in my opinion, the people that end up on your list will be better prospects from a marketing perspective and your email bounce rate will be a lot lower. The main reason for the lower bounce rate with the double opt-in is that people will try and input a bogus email to see if they can get your special offer/report (i.e.,. your bribe) without giving their true email address.

So do yourself a favour and go for the double opt-in option – if your list host gives you the choice (some only allow double opt-in). To review my reasons for this:

• removes false/dummy email addresses
• the people who end up opting in are a lot more qualified
• you are only adding serious people, and
• you will have lower spam complaints.

What you need to ensure is that you pre-sell the double opt-in confirmation page. A good way to strongly encourage people to go to their inbox is to make a short video reminding them of what they will receive when/after they click through your link. Sell them on the benefits, also give specific instructions on how to get back to their inbox, what your link will read, how to get your report and use it for immediate effect, etc. It is important not to get lazy here as making this short video you can improve your opt-in rate.

Take the time to get familiar with your list host (Aweber, GetResponse, etc.) as directing people to that pre-sell confirmation page/video is very easy to accomplish.

The best free tool available to you is Google’s keyword planner and do a search for your phrase. The default tab shows you “Ad group ideas” which can help you when determining keyword phrases to bid on, but in the beginning, you will want to check the “Keyword ideas” tab. Here you will see if there is any sizable search volume for the phrase you are interested in. If you’re not used to the new keyword planner, it is important to note that the results now list exact match searches. To help illustrate the difference between broad and exact – lingerie on broad match would bring back approx. Search volume of over 4 million whereas on exact you will see search results totalling a little less than 400,000 searches. If you want a very broad rule you could say the exact match is ten percent broad match. I have got a little off topic, but, if there is low search volume on relevant keywords, then do not promote that CPA offer.

Another good place for you to conduct research for demand is Google Trends. You can use Trends to see the search trend for a keyword over time. Prominent examples would be pumpkin carving, how to stuff a turkey, cook a turkey– you would see search peaks in the month of October for the last however many years to open you search up for. A good tip is then to find related CPA offers and bid on those terms as you will see that there are relatively low competition keywords phrases and therefore cheap.

A third option is to look at ebay.com as it is most likely the single largest marketplace of buyers and sellers online today. One last resource I will note here is watching television and reading newspapers and monthly magazines – a lot of money goes into the research around the ads in the major monthly magazines.
