Study Bio - Ocean Program at Biological Oceanography

Study Bio - Ocean Program at Biological Oceanography

Bio-Ocean is a joint study programme in Biological Oceanography offering an interdisciplinary combination of lectures, seminars, practicals. The programme covers Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Marine Geology, Experimental Design and Data Reporting and Cost-Benefit Analysis.

Biological Oceanography is a 2-year programme consisting of compulsory courses, elective courses and a research project.

Welcome Party Fall 2004
First year: basic studies in oceanography at the University of Kiel followed by advanced courses in oceanography and resource management at the University of Southern Denmark.

Second year: a research project in Biological Oceanography carried out either in Kiel or Odense and may be experimental or oriented towards administration/management.

The study programme (120 ECTS) in biological oceanography consists of compulsory courses (45 ECTS), optional courses (15 ECTS) and a project (60 ECTS).

The joint programme spans four semesters:

  • Term 1: mid-October to end January: Courses in Kiel
  • Term 2: mid-February to end June: Courses in Odense
  • July to September: Field courses and excursions in Kiel or Odense
  • Term 3 and 4: Project in Kiel or Odense

During the first term, students follow courses covering the basics of physical, chemical, biological and geological oceanography. Research Vessel Alkor also students follows elective courses relevant to biological oceanography. During the second term, at the University of Southern Denmark, the focus is on advanced biological oceanography and the management of natural resources and environmental economics. Also, students follow elective courses relevant to biological oceanography. In the third and fourth terms, students carry out an independent project work in biological oceanography under the supervision of an academic advisor from Kiel and Odense. Each term is assigned 30 ECTS points, and the project work is assigned 60 ECTS, resulting in 120 ECTS points At the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, the students will attain an M.Sc. degree in Biology, specialised in Biological Oceanography. At the University of Kiel, this programme will lead to a Diploma degree.

Teaching

Teaching is carried out in English, and the study programme has a strong international profile. The students will follow courses in Kiel (DE) as well as in Odense (DK). This exchange combined with the international profile of the programme help the students become competitive in the international science community and in the global job market.

The E-learning system at the University of Southern Denmark is available for easy access to the content of the lectures, seminars, etc. and communication.
All students and teachers have their personal access to the courses.
E-Learning (press LOGIN and click on the PREVIEW button at the end of the page for guest access; the latest upgrade of the system was in July 2004).

Job opportunities

Today, there is a clear need for candidates with a new interdisciplinary natural science profile. Such candidates are expected to be both competitive and able to take up positions traditionally occupied by engineers, lawyers and economists. These groups often administer environmental issues, e.g. approvals, without a proper scientific background in environmental affairs. The new candidates from the study programme in Biological Oceanography will be able to meet these needs and will be suited for the job market outside the public sector.
